Orchid Blossoms and an Experiment

imageimage

Nikon FE, 50mm F1.8, Kodak Portra 800

Orchid blossoms from our impossible-to-kill gift given to us by wonderful friends. And all this time I thought orchids were hard to keep alive.

An Experiment

As you might be able to tell, this is an experiment in posting with a new format. I’m trying to decide if I like being able to view photographs simultaneously at the cost of their size. (Tumblr forces images posted in a “Text” entry to a maximum of 500px, versus the 700px I get if I post them as images.) I think I want photo sets to show all the photos right away, without having to click arrows; unfortunately the theme I’m using doesn’t allow this with a photo post, at least not in an attractive format. The other disadvantage to using a Text post is that I can’t click the image to view it large in the lightbox. 500px is 500px is 500px.

Is there anyone out there with an opinion on this? I really like my theme…I’m hoping to avoid having to shop for a new one. Note you’ll need to actually visit this page to comment via Disqus; obviously you can’t see what I’m talking about on your Tumblr dashboard.

A Winter Walk in Black & White: Winter Decline
Konica Autoreflex TC, 50mm F1.7, Kodak Tri-X 400
I’m happy to report that the error with my recent black & white roll was merely scanning as color; Precision re-scanned the roll correctly and the results are quite pleasing.
And in other news, my good friend Ram sold me his Mamiya m645 1000s and its exquisite 80mm F1.9 prime, so I will be having some fun with that in the near future.

By the way, since so many people seem to like this photograph, I thought I’d mention you can purchase prints of this and many others on my actual Tumblr page by clicking the image to see it in the light box, then making a selection at the top of the screen.

Heel | Sailing on the Chesapeake Bay
Nikon FE, Vivitar 28-90mm F2.8, Kodak Portra 160
I ran out of film at the exact moment when she turned to port and gave me a gorgeous composition in my viewfinder. It was a tragic moment. I also made the split-second decision when I snapped this to break the rules of photography and make the horizon crooked for the sake of leveling the yacht. But I’m not sure they’re heeling enough to make it radical enough to work. If only the wind were a little stronger that day…
